About Me

I am the state representative for House District 33.  I was elected to this position for the first time in 2010 from western Havre and Hill County.

A representative is one who represents.  I am committed to being a true representative, as intended by the founding fathers — listening to you, the people, and carrying your message to Helena.

I am Kris Hansen, born December 21, 1969, in Peoria, Illinois.  This is me and my family, Fred, Sue, Seth, me, Joel, (and nephew Micah wandered in too).

My parents, Fred and Sue Hansen adopted me, and took me home on Christmas Day, 1969.  My dad retired from the Quaker Oats Corporation after 35 years of service.  My mother was and is a homemaker – and excelled at it.

For their retirement, my parents assumed caretaker duties on my aunt and uncle’s farm.  They hay and raise longhorns for rodeo.

My two younger brothers, Joel and Seth Hansen, have beautiful families of their own.

I graduated from Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School in 1988.

I attended Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois and graduated in 1992, with a degree in public administration and political science.

After college, I took a job with the Central Intelligence Agency, and spent some time in Somalia and Kenya.  Any questions?

After awhile in Washington, D.C., I decided to go to law school.  I attended The John Marshall Law School, in Chicago, and graduated in 2002.

My first legal job was with the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.  I clerked for Judge Bruce Black.

From there, I moved to Helena, Montana, to clerk for the Honorable Justice John Warner of the Montana Supreme Court.

While clerking, I joined the Montana Army National Guard.  I was a Judge Advocate.

During the 2005 legislative session, I clerked for the House Republican Leadership Office, where I got my first taste of service as a member of a representative body.

In 2006, I joined the law firm, Moore, O’Connell & Refling, in Bozeman, where I became a partner  practicing  civil law and defending businesses on behalf of their insurers.

In November 2007, I deployed to Iraq as part of  Task Force 49, an aviation brigade, as the Legal Assistance Attorney for 12 months.  It was my job to help deployed soldiers solve legal troubles they and their families encountered back home.

When I returned from Iraq, I took a position as the Chief Deputy County Attorney in the Hill County Attorney’s Office in Havre, Montana.   I prosecuted misdemeanors for Hill County, and I handled most civil affairs for the Hill County Commission.

Now, in addition to being State Representative, I am also in private practice as owner of Kristin Hansen, PLLC, in Havre.

On a more personal level, I like to be outside.  I enjoy hiking, fishing, hunting, gardening, x-country skiing, snowshoeing – you name it if it’s in the fresh air.  I also like to read, cook, attend concerts and theatre, and work on updating my 70-yr-old house.
